Old-school

Ainda há aqueles escritores old-school, e eu acho que sempre haverá esse tipo de escritor, que gosta do estereótipo do erudito, aquele-que-sabe-coisas-que-você-não-sabe e que está entediado de conversar com você. O amante de livros e clássicos e as obras condenadas à poeira e a escuridão. O amante do cheiro de livro.

Mas no fim das contas, quem sabe se a obra de sua vida, seja um livro, um projeto, um objetivo, um plano, um trabalho, quem sabe com certeza que essa obra não está também condenada à poeira e à escuridão?

Enquanto isso o mundo muda e não, o livro digital não substituirá o livro de papel. A televisão a cores substituiu a televisão preto-e-branco, mas a televisão não substituiu o cinema e a internet não matou a literatura. O mundo apenas ficou maior.

There is that kind of writer, and I think there always will be, that likes the scholar stereotype, the guy-that-knows-stuff-you-don’t-know and is bored to talk to you. The lover of books that are condemned to the dust and darkness. The book smell lover.

But in the end, who knows if the work of your life, be it a book, a project, an objective, a plan, who knows if that work is or isn’t condemned to the dust and darkness?

Meanwhile, the world changes and no, the digital book won’t sbustitute the paper book. The television hasn’t killed the movies and the internet hasn’t killed literature. The world got bigger, that’s all.

Resumindo / Summing up

Feira do livro de Porto Alegre: como sempre, um grande evento, com muita gente e muita coisa contecendo ao mesmo tempo. Pouca variedade nos títulos e minha tradicional busca por livros da coleção Aventuras Fantásticas foi infrutífera. Área infantil ótima, com shows, teatros e contação de histórias; chuva, com sempre, mas não o suficiente pra atrapalhar. Na verdade, até ajudou:   sábado com chuva e, apesar de molhar um pouco os pés, tinha bem menos gente. Dizem que as vendas despencaram, e eu acho que precisam seriamente centralizar as palestras pra não desperdiçar talentos falando em salas vazias. Uma descoberta legal foi a USA-Brazil books, vendendo livros usados em inglês bem baratinhos.

Feira do livro de Frederico Westfalen: bom demais, apesar de viajar à noite ter sido cansativo. Grande recepção da organização, palestra sobre Literatura e História em Quadrinhos pra umas 100 crianças de ensino fundamental e médio na tenda principal. Falei sobre Crepúsculo, Wolverine, Power Rangers, diferenças entre roteiros e romances e teve até quiz valendo livros. Sucesso absoluto.

No mais, projetos secretos tomando tempo, por isso apareço pouco no twitter;  Homesick Blues depois de uma pausa, volta à linha de produção nessa semana; tem conto em antologia inspirada em cinema pro ano que vem e (espero) livro novo no ano que vem também.

Porto Alegre Book Fair: the traditional event was big and crowded as usual. Too many people, too many events at the same time. The sales dropped a lot this year and the system is being contested. The children area was very interesting and my search for Fighting Fantasy books led nowhere.

Frederico Westfalen Book Fair: I gave a lecture about Literature and Comic books to about 100 kids from 8 to 16 years old, approximately. We talked about Twilight, Power Rangers, Wolverine, the differences between scripts and novels; there was also a quiz with books as rewards. very fun, total success.

Some secret projects are taking my time so lately I haven´t showed up in Twitter. Homesick Blues, after a short break, is back in business agin this week. Next year there will be a new book (hopefully) and a new short story in an anthology inspired by movies.

O velho uniforme / The old uniform

 Dá pra imaginar, um velho de sessenta anos vestindo um uniforme colorido numa dessas convenções de quadrinhos? Eu não resisti. Fui falar com ele.

Eventos / Events

Hoje eu vou estar na PUCRS pra falar com o pessoal sobre Escrita Criativa. Vai ser à 15:30 na arena do Celin, no prédio das Letras, 2o. andar.
Mês que vem, dia 9 de outubro, vou até Frederico Westfalen pra participar da Feirado Livro de lá. A idéia é uma palestra sobre literatura e história em quadrinhos e depois uma oficina com exercícios de escrita criativa aplicados na narrativa ficional. Estou bem ansioso pra conhecer a cidade. Tenho que pensar na seleção de músicas no ipod, porque são 7 horas de viagem!

Homesick Blues continua em produção, com o Eduardo Medeiros. Nossa ideia é ter, atá o fim do mês um preview com sinopse, as primeiras páginas e esboços.

Today I have a conversation with Literature students from Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. Next month, I´ll be at Frederico Westfalen in a Book Fair, to talk about literature and comics and later offer a creative writing workshop. It´s a 7 hour trip and I´ll have to get my ipod playlist ready!

Homesick Blues keeps on production, with Eduardo Medeiros. Our objective is to have a preview ready next month, with sinopsis, first pages and sketches.
